Unit 3 Project

Due Date: Friday, 29 April 2005

Having been introduced to the conventions of your field through researching an issue, you will now begin to synthesize your knowledge. Oxford Paperbacks produces a useful series entitled Very Short Introductions (including Literary Theory, History, Theology, Politics, and other subjects). For this assignment, imagine that you have been asked to contribute to a Very Short Introduction on your discipline. Your audience will consist of educated adults with only limited knowledge of the field.

Assignment: To write a 6-7 page introduction to an important issue within your discipline. This assignment will be completed individually.

Suggestions: Your paper should include:

  1. An overview of the issue
  2. A summary of various scholarly perspectives
  3. A brief statement of your own stance on this issue. In your research, which perspectives did you find most compelling and why?

A successful paper will succinctly define the issue at hand and cogently summarize significant scholarship. It should also show evidence of analysis of conflicting expert opinions on the issue and should situate your own perspective in the context of these professional texts.
