Assignment 3.1
Due Date: Monday, 11 April 2005
In this project, you will examine scholarly writing within your discipline by looking at professional publications. Professionals within each academic community modify their style to fit the discourse conventions of their discipline. You will begin to get a sense for both the content and stylistic conventions of your field by reading widely among books and journal articles.
Assignment: To produce an annotated bibliography of 10 sources relating to a specific issue within your discipline. Each annotation should consist of no more than a paragraph (i.e. approximately five sentences) summarizing the article or book and/or commenting on its usefulness as a research tool.
Process:
- Select a question/issue from the Professional Communities Issue list (or choose your own issue).
- We will spend one class period at the library finding sources. Acceptable sources include: journal articles, books, chapters from edited anthologies, articles from reliable professional Internet sites, etc. You should use no more than 2 websites (not including online copies of printed scholarly journals).
- You must use at least 2 print sources (i.e. books, or journal articles not available in electronic format).
- Skim and annotate your sources. Successful annotations will conform to the conventions of citation for your discipline and will lucidly and succinctly summarize the main thesis of the source.
