Unit 2 Project

Due Date: November 1 and 3, 2005

In your final project for Unit 1, you will synthesize your knowledge of effective public speaking and argumentation and present your individual stance on your chosen controversy. You will present your opinion in the form of a 5-6 minute speech, followed by a brief question-and-answer period. You should prepare thorough outlines or notecards for the speeches, but the speech should not be written out word-by-word. During the week, groups will meet to discuss their progress, exchange ideas, and practice speechifying.

A successful speech will not only offer your position, but also offer feasible solutions for the problem. Your presentation should summarize the controversy and discuss the merits and drawbacks of various opinions. You should then articulate your own position. A successful speech should exhibit both effective oral techniques and clear, well-supported argument. You will be responsible for turning in the following items after your presentation:

Feel free to make use of audiovisual aids, such as PowerPoint slides, but make sure that if you do so, you have practiced using the audiovisual equipment in our classroom in advance. In addition, any audiovisual content should supplement and support the content of your speech, not replace it.
