Article for Class Discussion

Please read Emma Burgin's opinion piece for the Daily Tar Heel. In your groups, talk about which argumentative strategies she uses, and why. Have someone jot down your notes to share with the class.

Writing Prompt

Today write about what you hunger for. You can write about something relatively small and individual, like a craving for chocolate, or something tremendously significant, like an end to the war in Iraq, as long as it's something you genuinely hunger for on a personal level. As Bonni Goldberg writes, "Hunger is both a physical and an emotional experience ... you can try to satisfy it, or you can encourage it. For example, if you long for the ocean, you might peruse ads for Caribbean vacations..." In this blog entry, write about anything that you long for, and if you feel inspired, you can even create links to relevant websites.

One caveat: Keep in mind that your classmates and teacher, as well as the web audience at large, will be reading this, so make sure you choose a subject that you feel is appropriate to share with your audience.

Writing Prompt

Find and link to a news story that grabs your attention in some way, whether you find it interesting, disturbing, saddening, funny, or provocative. What's your reaction to this story? Why do you want your blog audience to check it out?

To create a link, highlight the address of the page you want to link to, and copy it (choose edit and copy). Then, in the Blogger posting window, with the Compose tab active, select the text you want to make into a link, then click the link button in the top frame (it's the button just to the right of the text color selector, and it has a small chain over a globe). Paste the address into the window that pops up.

Writing Prompt

Today write about food. If this is too general a subject, begin by describing your most memorable breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Notice whether you spend more time describing the food, the atmosphere, or the company.

Writing Prompt

Today, write down a dream. It can be a recurring dream, one from childhood, a daydream, or a nightmare. As you write, notice which parts of the dream elude you, and which parts become clearer. Feel free to fill in the blank spots, alter, elaborate on, or extend the dream sequence.
